The Reverend Charles F. Blalock, Sr., 94, departed this life on September 6, 2025, at Emory Palliative Care Center, Atlanta, Georgia. He was born on March 3, 1931, to the late William Eldridge Blalock, Sr. and Mattie B. Wilder in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Chuck "B", as he was well known, was educated in the public schools of Raleigh, matriculating at Washington High School in 1948. After completing his Air Force military duty obligations, he was employed by
Laury Associates, owners of radio stations in Louisiana, Arkansas and North Carolina, eventually becoming Vice-President a n d General Manager of radio station WLLE in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Chuck accepted the call of Jesus and entered the service of the Lord in 1975. He delivered his initial sermon, Sunday, October 12, 1975, at Saint Matthew AME Church in Raleigh, NC.
In 1980, he was ordained at Bethel AME Church in Greensboro, NC at the Western NC Annual Conference by the late Bishop Harrison H. Bryant, and assigned to pastor Union Bethel AME Church in Cary, NC,
followed by assignments at Bethel, Reidsvillle, NC; Union Bethel, Winston
Salem, NC; Willow Tree AME, Morganton, NC; Lincolnville AME, Raleigh,
NC; Gaines Chapel, Efland, NC; Queens Chapel, Burlington, NC and Piney Grove AME, Raleigh, NC.
In 2006, at the mandatory pastoral retirement of age 75, Rev. Blalock became a Superannuated Elder in the AME Church, and in 2013, at the Western NC Annual Conference, was transferred to the Atlanta North Georgia Annual Conference of the 6th Episcopal District, and became affiliated with Antioch AME Church i n Stone Mountain, Georgia under the leadership of Reverend Doctor Stafford J. Wicker.
Chuck was an accomplished athlete, participating in football and basketball in college, and during his military service. In his later years, he became proficient as a golfer and bowler, qualifying for and participating in both sports in the National Senior Olympics in 2007, 2009 and 2013.
His civic participation included membership in Widow Son Lodge #4 (Prince Hall Affiliated); 33rd degree Commander of the Rite, Boyer Consistory #119; Sublime Prince (Shriner) in Kabala Temple #177; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; NAACP; American Legion; VFW; DAV and leadership roles in numerous civic organizations.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, William E. Blalock, Jr. (Bunky), William Henry Wilder, Joseph A. Wilder, and Kenneth S.
Wilder and his sister, Eleanor B. Randolf.
He is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina "Sue" Blalock; four sons, Anthony Jerome (Virginia) Blalock, Sr., William, Darren, and Charles; three daughters, Chandelier (Willis) Smartt, Sharon Specks and Crystal Kennedy; 26 grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; two brothers. Carroll Wilder of Charlotte, NC and Cleo Wilder of New Rochelle, NY; a first cousin, Hattie Mae Moore of Raleigh, NC; a sister in law, Cora Wilder of Nyack, NY; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and ministerial associates.
