Mr. Lee Douglas Bumgarner, is resting eternally with his Lord and Savior, following a lingering illness. He departed his earthly life on Friday August 18, 2023, at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, North Carolina. Born on October 19, 1946, in Catawba County, North Carolina to the late Cecil Owen Bumgarner and Viola Williamson Bumgarner, he was 76 years, 9 months and 30 days old.
"Doug" as he was affectionately called by his family and friends was a 1965 graduate of Ridgeview High School and a proud member of the renowned "Untouchables", the Ridgeview High School football team that was undefeated and unscored upon for an entire season in 1964! He proudly wore the number 10 on his football jersey.
Doug received an Associate's Degree from Kings College and attended Winston State College. He received the key to the City of Hickory on September 4, 2022. Doug was a member of Morningstar First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon since 1994, a Sunday School teacher, Church Treasurer and he was most proud to have served as an Usher for 46 years!
He served in the United States Army where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and was a Rifle Sharpshooter. Doug retired after 39 years of service as the first Black Computer Technician with the Catawba County Government. He was a member of the Hickory Masonic Lodge. Doug enjoyed photography, working in the yard and time spent with family and friends.
In addition to his maternal and paternal grandparents, Doug was preceded in death by his parents Cecil Owen Bumgarner and Viola Williamson Bumgarner.
He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories, his loving and devoted wife, Terlene Bumgarner of the home; sons, Chad Douglas Bumgarner (Rose Marie) of Atlanta, Georgia and Lee Nishion Bumgarner (Shannon) of Wilmington, North Carolina; daughter, Idalia Bumgarner Corpening (Brian) of Gastonia, North Carolina; grandson, Gabriel Bumgarner; granddaughters, Karri Bumgarner, Courtney Bumgarner, Camryn Bumgarner and Laila Bumgarner; brother, Donald Bumgarner of Hickory, North Carolina; sisters, Dorothy Hewitt of Hickory, North Carolina, Mary Prilou of Tennessee and Gail Bumgarner of Hickory, North Carolina; Terry Bumgarner, a cousin who was like a brother; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
