Obituary of a Faithful Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ
Gwendolyn Louise Pope Tucker went home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2022 following an extended illness. She was born May 18, 1929 in Hickory, North Carolina to the late Oliver J. and Clara Minnie Cloninger Pope,Sr. She was 93 years, 4 months and 2 days old. She has received her crown for eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gwendolyn's family and friends affectionately called her "Gwen", "Nana", or "Momma Gwen". Lovingly she made her grandchildren's friends feel like she was their Nana too.

In her earlier adult years she made her home in Brooklyn, New York and then Newark, New Jersey, later returning to Hickory.

Gwen was educated in the Hickory Public School System. A dedicated worker she held positions at Hickory Springs, Regals, The Country Club, Hickory City Schools, and the Hickory Soup Kitchen.

Gwen received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a faithful servant. She was a member of Hartzell United Methodist Church where she sang in the Gospel Choir. She had a lead song entitled "He's Coming Back". When Gwen sang her song, the whole church was "blessed."She also was a member of the Outreach Ministry, the United Methodist Women's Ministry, and the Senior Fun Bunch. Gwen loved attending the Aglow meeting, a women's monthly meeting in Hickory.

One of her favorite enjoyments in life was fishing. She would spend countless hours down at the fishing pond. She also enjoyed listening to music, bargain shopping, and harvesting fresh produce to preserve through canning. She was known for making the very best chow-chow. When it came to cooking, Gwen was highly skilled. Some of her memorable dishes included fancy congealed salads, pear salads, baked chicken with a special sauce, and her out of this world sweet potato pies. Her coconut cakes would have probably been her number one dessert above sweet potato pies, but once while baking a coconut cake for her sons, Gwen forgot to add the sugar. Biting into that cake was an experience that her sons will never forget. They got the surprise of their lives and still laugh about it to this day! Another thing Gwen loved to do was counting her heavy bag of coins, which she did practically everyday. Everywhere she went, Gwen carried her bag of coins. After hearing about Gwen's coins, one would probably be wondering if Gwen missed her calling as a Banker.
In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver J. Pope, Jr. and Melvin S. Pope;a great grandson, Curtis Eugene Miguel McCorkle and a daughter- in- law, Peggy Coates Lutz.
Gwendolyn Pope Tucker was well-loved and will be sorely missed by her children; sons, Reverend Xenophone Lutz, Jr. and Frederick Lutz (Rebecca) both of Hickory, North Carolina; daughter, Reverend Hilda Lutz Bailey of Hickory, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; brothers, Willie Pope (Jessie) of Hampton, Virginia, George Pope of Hickory, North Carolina and Allen Pope (Linda) of Orlando, Florida; sisters, Doris Pope Sanders, Alda Pope Lynch, and Linda Pope all of Hickory, North Carolina and Rosemary Pope McCorkle of Newton, North Carolina; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and a special caregiver Ms. Mildred Surratt.
