Obituary

Mr. Garfield K. Wilson, Sr. , passed, unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 in Tennessee. He was born December 5, 1962 in Catawba County to the late Terry R. Washington, Sr. and Betty Wilson Washington. Garfield was 58 years, 8 months and 13 days old.
Garfield, affectionately known as "Big Cat", "Field", "Goff", and "The Goffer" by family and friends, was a 1981 graduate of Hickory High School. He was also educated in Earl C. Job Corp and the University of Tennessee's Culinary Art Program. He retired from the Tennessee Board of Education and was employed by Amish Furniture Company in Tennessee.
Mr. Wilson could be found in church as a young man where he played the drums and sang in the choir at Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Garfield relocated to Tennessee, joined and worshipped at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Knoxville, Tennessee.
Garfield had many talents. He prided himself as a chef and loved preparing delicious meals for family and friends. Second nature to him was his gift of making people laugh. He could brighten any solemn room with his jokes and fun nature.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a grandson Mykel Wilson; mother in-law, Johnetta Matthews; father in-law, Willie James Elder and sister in-laws, Shannon Matthews and Hattie Matthews.
Left to cherish fun, fond and loving memories and many moments full of laughter are his wife, Sonia Matthews Wilson of the home; his children; sons, Derrian "Boone" (Shelly) Jenkins, Garfield K. Wilson, Jr., Walter Montreal Wilson all of Hickory, North Carolina, Steven Matthews, Stephon Matthews and Shawntez Matthews of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters, Marsuenique "Marcie" Jenkins, Shankita Wilson, LaToya Wilson all of Hickory, North Carolina along with Ineesha Wilson, Shantary (Roger) Matthews of Knoxville, Tennessee; adoptive children Alishia Jenkins of Hickory, North Carolina, Michael (Sharnita) Jenkins and Gevon (Desiree) Jenkins both of Florida; 34 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Terry R. (Deborah) Washington, Jr. of Knoxville, Tennessee, Charles and Anthony (Valarie) Washington of Hickory, North Carolina and Robert (Thelma) Frisen of Florida; sisters, LaDosca Jean Washington, LaDosca Jane (James) Sims and Alwana Shuford all of Hickory, North Carolina along with Gloria Williams of Sumter, South Carolina; sister in-laws, Sherry Matthews and Connie Tate both of Knoxville, Tennessee; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many cherished friends.
