Obituary

We mourn the passing of Dirk Malcolm Thompson, Sr., but we also celebrate a life beautifully lived—a life marked by great stature, quiet strength, deep faith, and enduring grace. Affectionately known as “Pig” by many, Dirk entered this world on November 28, 1961, born to the late Walter James Thompson and Gladys Saddler Thompson in Catawba County, North Carolina. Though his transition on Sunday, September 13, 2026, came unexpectedly, suddenly, and far too soon, the light of his life continues to shine through the love, laughter, memories, and legacy he leaves behind.

Dirk was a man of great character and charismatic spirit, blessed with uncommon grace and a presence that could fill a room. He was rooted in faith, anchored by family, and devoted to community. With confidence, warmth, natural swagger, and a style all of his own, Dirk was always dressed to impress; yet what people will remember most is not simply how he looked, but how he made them feel—seen, welcomed, encouraged, and valued.

From his earliest days proudly attending Busy Bee Nursery, the seeds of belonging, service, and community were planted in Dirk’s heart. Throughout his life, those seeds grew into a lasting commitment to the people around him. Dirk was all about community especially the Ridgeview Community. He stood with others, helped lead his community in meeting challenges, and showed up with strength, encouragement, and care whenever he was needed.

A proud graduate of Hickory High School’s Class of 1980, Dirk shared his gifts on the football field and basketball court, playing with heart, determination, and pride. His lifelong calling later led him to Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, where he earned his Funeral Service degree. Even as a child, Dirk was fascinated by funerals and drawn to the sacred act of honoring life and loss; he would lovingly hold services for his childhood pets while his siblings and friends looked on. What began as a tender childhood ritual became a lifelong ministry of compassion, service, and reverence for the lives of others. Today, we celebrate Dirk—not only for what he accomplished, but for who he was: a faithful steward, a beloved presence, a community-minded servant, and a man whose legacy will continue to speak for generations.

Dirk served faithfully at Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church, where he gave of himself as both a Trustee and a cook. In every role, he offered his time, his hands, and his heart. His meals were sought after by all who had the blessing of partaking in them, and through his cooking, Dirk nourished more than bodies—he fed fellowship, strengthened community, and created moments of joy around the table. He was well versed in the kitchen, a baker, and a grill master, often challenging others to match his skill. He often shared his methods of cooking with others because he knew they could not come close to his level. His commitment to faith also reached beyond the walls of one church. Dirk opened his doors to the newly established Exodus Missionary Baptist Church, Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church, and Whosoever Will Full Gospel Church, helping provide sacred space for worship, fellowship, and new beginnings. Through his generosity and hospitality, he made room for God’s work to take root and flourish in the community he loved so deeply.

Dirk was also a faithful and diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, rarely missing a game and often recording it to watch later if he could not see it live. Whether they won or lost, he stood by his team with pride—and, true to his spirited personality, he was always ready with a little good-natured trash talk. His loyalty, humor, and playful banter brought laughter to game days and added yet another unforgettable layer to the joy he shared with those around him.

In addition to his parents, Dirk was preceded in death by brothers, Walter James “Jimmy” Thompson, Jr. and Dexter Thompson.

Dirk leaves to mourn his passing, yet to celebrate his memory, his devoted wife of 30 years, Carolyn Watkins Thompson of the home; daughter, Ariel Dirkala Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, Dirk “Malcolm” Thompson, II of Hickory, North Carolina; brothers, Allen Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina, Gregory Thompson (Brenda) of Hickory, North Carolina, and Steven Roseman (Sharon) of Mitchellville, Maryland; sisters, Deborah Jessie of Connelly Springs, North Carolina, Regina Thompson-Sudderth (Bart) and Monica Thompson-Suggs of Wilson, North Carolina; his beloved nieces and nephews Tracie, Shatisha, Davishila (DG), DeVonne, Ivana, Aaron and Devar; special great-nephews who were dear to his heart, Jalen, Mylis, Chase; special classmates, Busy Bees and friends Gregory Johnson, Chris Morrison, Shannon Brooks, Felicia Setzer, and Sammy Lewis; special cousins Robert and Rose Dixon and Paris Witherspoon; a host of other relatives, friends, church family, classmates, and community members whose lives were touched by his love, laughter, service, and unmistakable spirit. Though his earthly presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of faith, hospitality, compassion, and community will continue to live on in every heart he blessed.
