Reflections of Life
On Friday, August 9, 2024, an Angel came to Carolina Caring, Newton, North Carolina, and bore the bright spirit of Diane Cowans Smith away to a land free from sickness, sorrow, and pain. Diane was born August 22, 1956 to the late James and Pauline Cowans. She was 67 years 11 months and 18 days old.
Diane was affectionately called "Skinny" by close family and friends. She was a member of Morningstar First Baptist Church. She retired after many years in healthcare from The Greens at Viewmont Skilled Nursing Facility, formerly known as the Brian Center.
In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Smith; sister, Faith Cowans; and brothers, Howard Cowans and Bobby Cowans.
Left to cherish fond loving memories her daughter, Monica Smith of Columbus, Ohio; son, Sean Harrison of Hickory, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Monquayla Manns; two great-grandchildren, Marley Cauthen and Echo Jones; six brothers, Johnny Cowans, Randy Cowans, Keith Cowans and Thomas (Cindy) Byrd all of Hickory, North Carolina, Dennis Cowans of Newton, North Carolina; one sister, Renee (Terry) Byrd Degree of Shelby, North Carolina; aunts, Geneva Byrd of Newton, North Carolina and Eleanor Byrd of Hickory, North Carolina; along with a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life services will be held on August 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Morningstar First Baptist Church, 126 7th Avenue SW, Hickory, North Carolina. The family will receive family and friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00p.m. at the church. Dirk M. Thompson Mortuary is assisting the Cowans and Smith families (828) 323-1980 .
